Teeth Whitening Q & A

How does teeth whitening work?

Teeth develop stains from foods and drinks that deposit pigment into your tooth enamel. Common foods and drinks that cause stains include coffee, tea, red wine, soda, dark-colored juices, frozen pops, soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, and tomato sauce.

Dr. Lindegren uses the Zoom whitening system to gently remove stains from teeth for a brighter, whiter smile. The Zoom system incorporates a professional-grade bleach solution and fluoride to protect your teeth and whiten your smile with little or no sensitivity. With Zoom, your teeth can become up to four shades whiter in one appointment.

What can I expect during an in-office teeth whitening visit?

During your visit for teeth whitening, Dr. Lindegren inspects your teeth and determines which whitening solution is best for your cosmetic goals. She begins by taking a shade of your original color used later to compare how many shades your teeth improved. She then places a protected barrier on your gums to prevent any burning of tissue. With the barrier in place, Dr. Lindegren gently brushes the whitening solution on your teeth.

An LED whitening lamp is placed in front of your mouth to enhance the whitening process. While you wait, you can watch a movie or listen to music. After the whitening treatment, Dr. Lindegren rinses your mouth and removes the dental shield. Dr. Lindegren will then compare the shade you began with to the final shade. You’ll be able to see an immediate improvement in the whiteness of your teeth after your visit Dr. Lindegren then will compare the shade you began with to the shade you are now.

What type of at-home whitening system is best?

In many cases, over-the-counter teeth whitening products cause sensitivity and pain and should be avoided. For a safe option with little or no sensitivity, Dr. Lindegren offers at-home Zoom whitening and alternative solutions to protect and whiten your teeth.

Your at-home kit includes a custom-made mouthpiece, whitening gels, and thorough instructions. The whitening gels come in two concentrations, and Dr. Lindegren helps you choose the appropriate strength based on your goals and sensitivity level. She then explains how to put the gels into the mouthpiece and how long to wear the mouthpiece.

The Zoom system can be used daily for up to five days. At-home whitening can be used on its own or as a follow-up treatment after your in-office session. Dr. Lindegren may also recommend using an at-home kit for touch-ups every few months to maintain your white smile.
